Recent studies have shown that summer weather may increase occurrences of gout attacks.

Recent studies have shown that summer weather may increase occurrences of gout attacks. And while gout is found predominantly in men, it can also occur in women. So remember to stay cool and hydrated this summer!

The Centers for Disease Control defines gout as a rheumatic disease resulting from deposition of uric acid crystals (monosodium urate) in tissues and fluids within the body. This process is caused by an overproduction or under excretion of uric acid. Certain common medications, alcohol, and dietary foods are known to be contributory factors.

Acute gout will typically manifest itself as an acutely red, hot, and swollen joint with excruciating pain. These acute gouty flare-ups respond well to treatment with oral anti-inflammatory medicines and may be prevented with medication and diet changes. Recurrent bouts of acute gout can lead to a degenerative form of chronic arthritis called gouty arthritis.

For more information about gout, visit this page at the CDC website.

Upstate Bone and Joint wishes a very happy Mother's Day to all the moms in our community.

Upstate Bone and Joint wishes a very happy Mother’s Day to those strong, kind, loving people who make our community a better place…moms.

Take a moment this Mother’s Day to thank all the moms out there for everything they do!

And here are some easy recipes you can use to surprise Mom and make this Mother’s Day even sweeter.

FRENCH BANANA PANCAKES

Prep: 10 min. Cook: 30 min.

Yield: 5-6 Servings

Ingredients

Pancakes:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar

1 cup milk

2 eggs

3 tablespoons butter, melted

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

Filling:

1/4 cup butter

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 cup half-and-half cream

5 to 6 firm bananas, halved lengthwise

Whipped cream and additional cinnamon, optional

Directions

Sift flour and confectioners’ sugar into a bowl. Add milk, eggs, butter, vanilla and salt; beat until smooth.

Heat a lightly greased 6-in. skillet; add about 3 tablespoons batter, spreading to almost cover bottom of skillet. Cook until lightly browned; turn and brown the other side. Remove to a wire rack. Repeat with remaining batter (make 10-12 pancakes), greasing skillet as needed.

For filling, melt butter in large skillet. Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir in cream and cook until slightly thickened. Add half of the bananas at a time to skillet; heat for 2-3 minutes, spooning sauce over them. Remove from the heat.

Roll a pancake around each banana half and place on a serving platter. Spoon sauce over pancakes. Top with whipped cream and dash of cinnamon if desired. Yield: 5-6 servings.

AMERICANA SMOOTHIES

2 cups cubed seedless watermelon, frozen

When you visit Upstate Bone and Joint, you might find yourself being seen by Sean Irvin, PA, or Georgeanna Lowdermilk, PA-C.

When you visit Upstate Bone and Joint, you may be seen by Sean Irvin, PA, or Georgeanna Lowdermilk, PA-C. But you may not know that “PA” stands for physician assistant…or what a physician assitant’s responsibilities are.

A physician assistant (PA) is a highly-educated health professional who is licensed to practice medicine with the supervision of a licensed physician. The relationship between the physician and the PA allows both to make better use of their time and training. Thus, more patients will get better, more personal health care. It is a team effort.

Some physician assistant duties may include:

Learning the history of the patient’s medical problem, performing a complete physical examination, identifying problems, and recording important data in a professional way.

Ordering and reading diagnostic information, such as, blood tests, X-rays, EKGs, and Pap smears.

Diagnosing and treating medical problems, writing prescriptions for medications, and giving hospital instructions for other members of the healthcare team.

Performing therapeutic procedures, such as, injections, immunizations, appropriate wound care including stitches, cast application and follow up of simple bone breaks.

Counseling and teaching patients about ways to improve and maintain physical and mental health including: diet, disease prevention and therapy, normal growth and development, family planning, and adjusting to sudden changes in their daily lives.

Seeing patients, participating in surgery, recording the progress of patients, and planning therapy with the supervising physician.

Assisting patients who need continuing care whether in the home, hospital, or nursing home.

We’ve heard that calcium is required for good bone health. But why do you need it, and how much do you need?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes calcium as a mineral needed by the body for healthy bones, teeth, and proper function of the heart, muscles, and nerves. The body cannot produce calcium; therefore, it must be absorbed through food. Good sources of calcium include:

Dairy products—low fat or nonfat milk, cheese, and yogurt

Dark green leafy vegetables—bok choy and broccoli

Calcium fortified foods—orange juice, cereal, bread, soy beverages, and tofu products

Nuts—almonds

Vitamin D also plays an important role in healthy bone development. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium (this is why milk is fortified with vitamin D).

Recommended amount of calcium vary for individuals. Below is a table of adequate intakes as outlined by the National Academy of Science.
